Met Gala 2015 : China, Through the Looking Glass

Rihanna wearing Guo Pei with Christian Louboutin Shoes

Social Media went crazy last night and this morning as the images of the eagerly anticipated looks from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala became live. We were all mesmerised, couture gowns gracing the carpets, sharp tailored suits strutting to the entrance and seeing our favourite celebrities enter this huge $25,000 a ticket event. It is definitely, for me, certainly difficult to choose a "best dressed" as pretty much all the stars seen stunned in custom made and runway collections. This is definitely the most important fashion event of the year. Especially as its hosted by the Queen of Fashion herself, Anna Wintour, who was helped with Co-Host Jennifer Lawrence.

This year, the theme of the gala was "China : Through the Looking Glass." Very exciting to say the least. Some stars followed the theme more than others, such as Rihanna captivating photographers with THAT dress. It took a staggering 100 people to make in a time span of 2 whole years. Incredible. This year was an opportunity for the women (and men of course) to look to traditional chinese designs for inspiration…and what gorgeous outcomes where seen!

Red was a big hit this year. Seen on Rita Ora, arriving with Tom ford on her arm, whilst wearing one
of his custom creations. I don't know what I'm more jealous of! From Gigi Hadid in a feminine Diane Von Frustenberg number, to Jlo in that daring Atelier Versace red number - gripping the traditional chinese colour was one of the popular choices. However, some equally stunning stars chose a rather different colour Palette. From Kendall Jenner in a beautiful green Calvin Klein Collection gown to her own sister Kim KW, looking absolutely radiant in a white Roberto Cavalli number. So much variety of fashion is what appeals us all to the Met. Incredible fashion, with incredible creative minds behind them.

I always see the Met as a designer's chance, both relatively unknown and known, to bring the collections to life. Yes, we see them on the catwalk, but it's a breath of fresh air to see the designs come to life in a different way. In a more natural one. In addition, it's also great to see the custom-made gowns which designers create for individual stars - which is always fantastic on a couture level. It's so luxurious and enviable. An incredible vibe, even through images. Designers such as Tom Ford, Ricardo Tisci, Stella McCartney and Jeremy Scott physically made an appearance themselves beside the women they have dressed. But lets not forget Olivier Rousteing who arrived with good friend, Justin Bieber, dressed in black with gold dragon detailing on the jacket. Minimalistic, but I loved it. Gigi Hadid was asked at the event who her favourite look of the night was and she replied; "Kim's. For Sure."

The met had a large range of "nudity" so to speak this year. From Beyonce in Givenchy to Miley Cyrus in Alexander Wang - it seems that baring the flesh is one of the biggest statements. It certainly worked for all women on the carpet. No wardrobe malfunctions were made! Phew.

But of course, it was Beyonce and Jay Z who made a last minute appearance for the event. The King and Queen of pop culture and probably the couple everyone was anticipating the most (as well as Kim and Kanye of course). Just before this surprise appearance was made, Rihanna had stole the show in that one dress that just cannot rid our minds. What an incredible display of fashion … and I am so excited to see all the looks next year! But until then, heres to a year of being in awe of these beautiful and lusted after creations.
